Bio-composites from Canola Oil Based Resin and Hemp Fibers

چکیده
INTRODUCTION The environmental concerns, including dwindling crude oil resources, high oil prices, pollution, greenhouse CO2 emissions, and toxicity in the environment, married to societal pressures towards sustainable development are currently making countries around the world turn to biomass as a renewable resource for a variety of products: fuels, lubricants, chemicals, polymers, fibers, neutraceuticals, etc. Injection moldable bio-composite, made from natural fibers and polypropylene, has been increasingly used in automotive industry [1-2]. Thermoset resins synthesized from soy-bean oil have been shown to have a great potential as matrix in composites manufactured using VARTM and SMC [3]. This study has been extended to Canola oil [4] since the latter is believed to yield better properties than the soy bean oil based resin due to low amount of saturated fatty acid. The present study is focused on manufacturing and evaluating the properties of biocomposites made using the canola-oil based thermoset resin and hemp fibers.

Fabrication of Glass Fiber Reinforced Composites Based on Bio-Oil Phenol Formaldehyde Resin
In this study, bio-oil from fast pyrolysis of renewable biomass was added by the mass of phenol to synthesize bio-oil phenol formaldehyde (BPF) resins, which were used to fabricate glass fiber (GF) reinforced BPF resin (GF/BPF) composites. The properties of the BPF resin and the GF/BPF composites prepared were tested. The functional groups and thermal property of BPF resin were thoroughly inves...
متن کاملInvestigation of Tensile Characteristics of an Epoxy Matrix Com-posite with Uni-Directional and Hybrid Tissue Natural Hemp Fibers
Using natural hemp fibers to reinforce the tensile characteristics of polymer matrix composites is investigated in this article. The fibers were applied to the epoxy matrix in unidirectional and hybrid tissue forms. After preparation of standard tensile stress test specimens via manual layup, the standard tensile test was done. Young’s modulus, ultimate tensile stress, and the amount of absorb...
متن کاملDevelopment, Testing and characterization of Epoxy-Cotton Fiber - Polymer Composites
Natural fibers have been used to reinforce materials for many years. More currently they have been employed in combination with plastics. Many types of natural fibers have been investigated for use in plastics including flax, hemp, jute, cotton and banana. Natural fibers have the advantage that they are renewable resources and have marketing appeal. These agricultural wastes can be used to prep...
متن کاملEvaluating Interference of THC in Hemp Food Products With Employee Drug Testing
A toxicological study was conducted to evaluate the potential conflict between extended consumption of hemp food products and workplace drug-testing programs in the United States. Fifteen volunteers ingested hemp/canola oil blends containing four different concentrations of delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), each over a 10-day period. Corresponding THC doses ranged from 0.09 to 0.6 milligrams p...
متن کاملMechanical Properties and Water Absorption of Hemp Fibers–Reinforced Unsaturated Polyester Composites: Effect of Fiber Surface Treatment with a Heterofunctional Monomer
Hemp fibers–reinforced unsaturated polyester (UP) composites were prepared by hand lay-out compression molding. Hemp fibers were treated with isocyanatoethyl methacrylate (IEM), using dibutyltin dilaurate as a catalyst. The results indicated that fiber treatment significantly increased tensile strength, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and water resistance of the resulting composites, and y...
